  1. Gingerbreads are traditional Slovak cookies baked in almost all Slovak families. However, the recipes vary a lot, the scent of gingerbreads is the same.
Usually you have to wait several days untill they are soft, but our grandmothers found out that if you put a slice of an apple into the box together with the gingerbreads, you don't have to wait so long!

  2. Gingerbread is common here in Hungary too.

We make it every year and some is put on the Christmas tree as a decoration, some just eaten.

I love gingerbread. The fragrance of it is one of my favorite parts of Christmas!

  3. Gingerbread are the surprise item - we all seem to know them and think they are a very definite part of our Christmas traditions. And all of a sudden we have them all over Europe! Yes, we make them in Finland as well.

The Finnish gingerbread are darker thanat least the Hungarian ones. We decorate them with sugar glazing; very popular with children. Our gingerbread are quite thin and hard. The smell is spicy, taste depending on recipe. I think the dark colour comes from molasses.

There should be a Finnish recipe eventually in the site.
